Division of Mathematics & Statistics
We offer an honours degree in Mathematics. With appropriate choices of modules, students can also obtain a named award in Mathematical Sciences with the appropriate speciality – Computing Mathematics, Operational Research or Statistics.
In addition, Mathematics can be combined with Education, leading to qualified teacher status. For more information, see “Courses” in “Prospective Students”.
Research activities
The division is active in research with groups in Artificial Intelligence, Modelling and Analysis, Data Integrity, and Statistics, as well as a number of smaller projects.
The division’s research was part of the University’s computing submission in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, which was given an international excellence rating (grade 4).
Teaching
The division is active in developing innovative methods of teaching and learning, particularly in the use of computer algebra packages including…
- Maple – Very powerful package for doing virtually all branches of mathematics, including algebra, calculus and graph drawing. Can also be used as a programming language
- Derive – A menu-driven approach to computer algebra. Again includes graph drawing and calculus. Still available in DOS as well as Windows versions.
- Mathcad – An interactive numerical processor with a 2 dimensional format. Mathematics is entered in using normal mathematical notation.
- Stella – Enables numerical and statistical simulations to be constructed from predefined model building components
- Witness – Enables numerical and statistical simulations to be constructed from predefined model building components
- SPSS – A powerful statistics package used in a wide variety of disciplines
