The University has invested £15m into the development of the University’s Glyntaff campus, providing a new home for the Faculty of Health, Sport and Science. It is situated just the other side of the valley from the Treforest campus and it’s a 10 minute walk between the two campuses.
The impressive development, which included refurbishment of the Grade II listed grammar school building, as well as the construction of state-of-the-art science laboratories, gives science and sport staff and students a modern, purpose-built environment in which to work.
These new facilities incorporate ultramodern laboratories to deliver an enhanced teaching experience to students on all of the University’s sports and science courses.
A large physiology laboratory for the testing of human performance and health is at the disposal of sports coaching and exercise science students, while geography and environmental science students are being taught using the latest applied-GIS and environmental modelling software in large and bespoke teaching computer laboratories.
Forensic science students benefit from a Scenes of Crime house and laboratories, and medical and other biological science students can learn in microbiology and molecular research laboratories in the new science building.
At the lower Glyntaff site, Police Sciences teaching now takes place in a newly-refurbished building, where teaching facilities include mock interview rooms, with a total immersion simulation suite and control room. The building also houses catering facilities, a Students’ Union office, a social learning space with open-access computers, and the Faculty’s student advice shop. These new facilities enhance the partnership between South Wales Police and the University’s Police Sciences Division that provides a foundation degree in Police Sciences to new recruits.
Dean of the Faculty of Health, Sport and Science, Professor Donna Mead, OBE, said, “This vibrant development brings together on one campus the Health, Sport and Sciences programmes and create an excellent learning and teaching environment for our next generation of scientists. “This investment demonstrates the expansion of the Faculty in recent years and the growing popularity of health, science and sport courses at the University.” This investment demonstrates the expansion of the Faculty in recent years and the growing popularity of health, science and sport courses at the University.
The development is just part of the University’s £130million investment in its facilities and campuses to ensure students get the best possible learning experience. This exciting programme of developments will see a radical change in student facilities across the University. For more information please visit our Developments Website.
