Life at Glamorgan
Student support
University is a fantastic time in your life, but you may get a few hassles along the way.
At Glamorgan, you will find all the support you need to make sure your university experience runs as smoothly as possible. If you want any information, advice or guidance on any emotional, financial or medical issue, there is a network of people ready to help.
Counselling, advice and welfare
The University offers a professional, confidential counselling service for all students. Professional staff are on hand at the Counselling and Mental Wellbeing Services to help you deal with the practicalities of student life.
The Students’ Union
The welfare service provided by the Students’ Union is there to help with any problems which may occur during your time at the University of Glamorgan. Whether it is financial, health related, accommodation or it might be you just need a sympathetic ear. We are a confidential service.
Disability and Dyslexia Service
The University of Glamorgan is committed to providing an inclusive learning environment. The Disability and Dyslexia Service offers a range of support services for students with a specific learning disability or impairment, and we encourage you to discuss your individual requirements with an Adviser as early as possible.
Health
“I have had excellent support from the University staff. They were very approachable and I wasn’t made to feel different. I got the advice and encouragement I needed to get my work done.”
Susan Laing, BSc (Hons) Social Sciences
The Health Centre on our Treforest campus offers a nurse-led, walk-in or phone-in service, providing help and advice for any health related issue. The Centre is open Monday to Friday with regular GP surgeries. For students who live in Cardiff, the ATRiuM Health Clinic offers regular appointments.
Spiritual wellbeing
The Chaplaincy, while rooted in the Christian tradition, is an open and inclusive service that provides a reference point for students of all faiths. We have a number of advisers from different faiths – Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism – and we are available to give pastoral support.
Childcare
The University’s Playcentre provides full-time and part-time care for children aged between three months and five years. Registered by the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales, priority places are given to children of Glamorgan students and staff. Visit the Playcentre website for more information.
Support for care leavers
If you’ve been in care, you might not have the traditional family support that most students have when they go to university – but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out. Here at Glamorgan, we’ve got lots of experience of supporting people from all kinds of backgrounds to apply to and succeed at university.
A university degree can really open doors, developing your skills, knowledge and confidence to kickstart your career. We’ve put together a package of support specifically for care leavers who would like to come and study with us. If you’ve been in care and are under 21, you’ll be entitled to help and advice on everything from filling in your application form to managing your money.
