Life at Glamorgan

Culture

There is an abundance of opportunities to satisfy any cultural cravings you may have whilst living in South Wales. Cardiff is home to the Wales Millennium Centre which has a year round programme of theatre, dance and music. There are also a number of other theatres and arts venues located in Cardiff, including The Motorpoint Arena,
The New Theatre, Chapter Arts Centre and the Sherman Theatre. In Cardiff Bay you will also find ‘Craft in the Bay’ which is a great place to see art and craft from the local areas.

In Pontypridd you will find Muni Arts Centre, a converted church that is renowned for hosting gigs by the likes of Lost Prophets and Funeral for a Friend. You’ll also find comedy, cinema, exhibitions and community events being held there.

Nightlife

Students living in Treforest or Pontypridd will find an array of bars and pubs that hold regular events from quizzes and karaoke to disco and DJ evenings. You’ll also be able to take advantage of the brand new students’ union building with its bars and music venue.

In Cardiff you will be spoilt for choice, from large capacity clubs to smaller more intimate venues, you’ll find live music or DJ nights covering a wide range of music genres and tastes. You also have your very own students’ union at ATRiuM.

Heritage

Whilst living in Cardiff or Pontypridd it would be a shame not to visit Cardiff Castle, or take a day out in St Fagans – the open-air museum of Welsh life set within 100-acres of parkland in the grounds of St Fagans castle. Here you can find some of the heritage of South Wales, from traditional crafts and activities to exploring over forty original buildings from different historical periods that have been re-erected on the site.

The great outdoors

South Wales is home to some beautiful scenery and the University of Glamorgan sits in a prime location for you to enjoy it. From the Treforest campus you can look out of the window and take in the rolling hills in front of you, from there it’s not much of a hop to the unspoilt beaches of Ogmore and Southerndown or the breathtaking walks of the Brecon Beacons.

Closer to home there are the pretty Bute and Roath parks in Cardiff, a chance to sit by the sea with an ice-cream at Cardiff Bay or enjoy a lazy day in Ynysangharad Park, Pontypridd. You could even head to Barry Island for your own ‘Gavin and Stacey’ sightseeing tour of the beach and arcades!
